California Environmental Justice Alliance - Fundraising & Grant Management With Salesforce

OneTenth Consulting is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the California Environmental Justice Alliance for the implementation of their CRM system, supporting their fundraising and grant management needs.

The California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA) is a statewide, community-led alliance that works to achieve environmental justice by advancing policy solutions. Their mission is to unite the powerful local organizing of their members in the communities most impacted by environmental hazards – low-income communities and communities of color  – to create comprehensive opportunities for change at a statewide level. They build the power of communities across California to create policies that will alleviate poverty and pollution. Together, they are growing the statewide movement for environmental health and social justice.

As CEJA’s program areas continued to grow and expand, it became imperative to evaluate the systems and technology in place to ensure it was evolving with their organizational needs. In 2019, CEJA reached out to OneTenth Consulting to implement a Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) system in an effort to cultivate stronger relationships with their constituents and increase operational efficiencies.

The Challenges

CEJA had been using ActBlue for online fundraising and a variety of offline tools to track grants and grant deliverables. While this had been a suitable solution up to this point, it was unable to scale in an optimal way. Specifically, CEJA needed:

  • A centralized platform for donor and funder information with all touchpoints and interactions in one place, providing a 360-degree view of the constituent

  • An ability to track the full grant lifecycle and related requirements and dates

  • An ability to track and report on programmatic deliverables

  • A platform to collaborate across business units for grant-related deliverables

  • An ability to report across all funding streams and surface insights

Both OneTenth and CEJA concluded that Salesforce would be the best platform to address these needs.

The Implementation

CEJA implemented Salesforce with an initial focus on constituent management and fundraising. This included :

  • Installing the Salesforce Platform and the Nonprofit Success Pack

  • Configuring the system to support CEJA’s terminology and development strategy

  • Configuring and integrating an online donation tool

  • Migrating relevant data from ActBlue and other sources

  • Developing reports and dashboards

  • End-User Training and Post-Deployment Support

Technology and Tools

CEJA chose Salesforce for several reasons:

  • Ability to leverage Salesforce.org’s Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) application that provides best-in-class features to support nonprofits such as complex gift processing, grant management, and high-touch fundraising

  • Access to the Power Of Us Hub community to exchange ideas and best practices with thousands of nonprofits with similar needs as CEJA

  • Access to the AppExchange, a marketplace of new and innovative tools readily available to extend Salesforce’s functionality and enhance the user’s experience

  • Ability to create custom modules to support non-fundraising tasks, such as program management, event registration, and impact measurement


To complement the Salesforce solution, CEJA and OneTenth implemented GiveLively to support online fundraising. The GiveLively solution offers fundraising pages, peer-to-peer functionality, and a seamless integration with Salesforce’s NPSP application.

What’s Next

CEJA now has a centralized platform for fundraising and grant management that is scalable and flexible to evolve with their growth. Adhering to OneTenth’s “crawl, walk, run” approach to CRM which implements new functionality in small but impactful phases, CEJA aims to enhance the platform further in 2020 for program management, enhanced reporting, and document management.
