Connecting Oceans and Opportunities: MISS Scales Impact with Salesforce
As MISS continued to expand, their growth outpaced their technology infrastructure, which relied on separate systems for managing constituent relationships, membership applications, and program engagement. Key tasks, such as tracking member involvement, capturing program participation data, and generating membership reports, became time-consuming, with staff handling information stored across disparate platforms. Without a centralized system, MISS struggled to efficiently manage these vital operations, making it challenging to tell the full story of their impact and engage stakeholders meaningfully.
Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS) aims to advance the field of shark, ray, and other marine sciences by challenging the status quo of underrepresentation of gender minorities from historically-excluded communities of color and by providing accessible, equitable pathways to research, conservation, and education.
The Challenge: As MISS continued to expand, their growth outpaced their technology infrastructure, which relied on separate systems for managing constituent relationships, membership applications, and program engagement.
The Solution: In response to this need for a unified and scalable platform, MISS partnered with OneTenth Consulting to implement Salesforce as the backbone of its operational infrastructure. The project followed OneTenth's phased "crawl, walk, run" methodology, focusing on consolidating systems and streamlining operations. Key components of the solution included:
Constituent Management. Salesforce’s Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) became the foundation for centralizing constituent data—including members, donors, partners, and program participants. Centralized data now eliminates silos, enabling a holistic view of supporters and allowing MISS to personalize communications and strengthen relationships with its community.
Program Management. OneTenth implemented Salesforce’s Program Management Module (PMM) to track membership and program participation across MISS’s offerings, supporting programs focused on marine science research, conservation, and educational outreach. PMM enabled staff to monitor member involvement and optimize program enrollment, allowing MISS to easily scale and adapt its offerings to support growing numbers of members and programs.
Membership Application Automation. To facilitate the application process and improve data accuracy, MISS adopted FormAssembly, integrated with Salesforce to enable seamless data flow. Automations were configured to reduce manual entry during the membership application and onboarding process, freeing up staff resources for more strategic work and creating a smoother experience for applicants. Membership dues are now processed through Stripe and integrated with NPSP, giving the membership team insights into engagement and the impact of membership campaigns. These insights empowered MISS to engage supporters more effectively and increase their fundraising potential.
Reporting and Dashboards. Salesforce’s reporting tools provided MISS with real-time access to key metrics on program participation, member engagement, and fundraising activities. Customized dashboards offered clear, actionable insights, reducing the time required for manual reporting and enabling the organization to make data-driven decisions.
Impact: With Salesforce now at the core of its operations, MISS has transformed how it engages and manages its community. Automated processes have reduced the administrative load on staff, while centralized data enhances data accuracy and transparency. Staff can now devote more time to advancing MISS’s mission, knowing they have real-time insights to guide their work. The leadership team is also better equipped to report on impact, plan strategically, and engage funders, strengthening MISS’s capacity to challenge inequities in marine sciences.
Future Roadmap: Looking ahead, MISS plans to further deepen its engagement with supporters and streamline grant management within Salesforce. These enhancements will ensure MISS continues to grow sustainably, expands its programs, and builds enduring connections with stakeholders.
"Working with MISS has been incredibly fulfilling. Their passion for creating inclusive spaces in marine sciences reflects the mission-driven work we love supporting. Through Salesforce, we've helped automate their membership operations, enabling them to make data-informed decisions with greater ease. We’re honored to contribute to their journey, and we can’t wait to see how MISS continues to create pathways for the next generation of marine scientists.” - Rubin Singh, CEO of OneTenth Consulting
"I was amazed at how much the OneTenth team was able to accomplish within our budget. As a small nonprofit with only a handful of staff, this infrastructure will be truly game-changing." - Jasmin Graham, MISS President & CEO
The partnership between MISS and OneTenth Consulting illustrates how a technology platform, coupled with a nonprofit's vision for equity, can drive meaningful change. With Salesforce as a solid foundation, MISS is now better equipped than ever to serve its community, expand its reach, and showcase the impact of its efforts in marine science.

Chicago Lights - Program Management With Salesforce
By automating manual processes and consolidating data in Salesforce, Chicago Lights reduced administrative burden, improved data accuracy, and saved valuable staff time. This allowed the organization to redirect resources towards program delivery and expansion.
Chicago Lights is a non-profit organization based in Chicago, dedicated to providing educational, social, and emotional support to children, youth, and adults in historically marginalized communities. With a mission to empower individuals and families to thrive, Chicago Lights offers a wide range of programs, including tutoring, mentoring, arts education, and social services.
The Challenge:
Prior to implementing Salesforce, Chicago Lights faced several challenges in managing their operations efficiently. The organization relied on manual processes, separate systems to track social services, and spreadsheets to track tutoring enrollment and volunteer management. This fragmented approach resulted in data inconsistencies, limited visibility into key metrics, and a lack of centralized communication channels. Chicago Lights recognized the need for a comprehensive solution to streamline their operations, enhance participant and volunteer engagement, and improve program outcomes.
Solutions:
To address these challenges, Chicago Lights partnered with OneTenth Consulting to implement a customized Salesforce solution. The implementation involved the following key components:
1. Constituent Management: Salesforce's Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) was leveraged to centralize all constituent data (participants, volunteers, partners, etc.) and communication. Participant data from external systems were migrated into Salesforce to reduce any data silos. This allowed Chicago Lights to gain a holistic view of their constituent base, identify trends, and personalize communication to enhance constituent engagement.
2. Program Enrollment and Management: Form Assembly was integrated to capture student and tutor registration data, allowing data to flow into Salesforce seamlessly. The Program Management Module (PMM) was implemented to track each participant’s engagement in Chicago Lights’ programs. This included students, tutors, and participants in social services. Custom components and workflows were utilized to streamline program enrollment, track attendance, and monitor program outcomes. This enabled Chicago Lights to efficiently manage program logistics, setting the foundation to measure impact, and make data-driven decisions to improve program effectiveness.
3. Case Management: Core to Chicago’s Lights’ values is establishing deep connections in providing case management services. To support this, Salesforce's Nonprofit Case Management Module was implemented to track client notes, goals, outcomes, and assessments. This allowed Chicago Lights to ensure clients have the appropriate resources and care throughout their engagement with the program.
4. Reporting and Analytics: Salesforce's robust reporting and analytics capabilities were leveraged to create customized dashboards and reports. This provided Chicago Lights with real-time insights into key metrics, such as program engagement, participation and attendance, and volunteer engagement. Future plans include dashboards for goal-tracking and assessments for students, so leadership can easily surface issues requiring further attention. These insights will enable Chicago Lights to identify areas for improvement, optimize resource allocation, and demonstrate impact to stakeholders.
Impact:
By automating manual processes and consolidating data in Salesforce, Chicago Lights reduced administrative burden, improved data accuracy, and saved valuable staff time. This allowed the organization to redirect resources towards program delivery and expansion.
With better visibility into program data, Chicago Lights can identify areas for improvement, measure impact, and make data-driven decisions.
Future Roadmap:
As we look to the future, Chicago Lights plans to onboard all of their programs onto Salesforce and explore more opportunities for goal-tracking, assessment analysis, and identifying patterns and trends with their newly collected data. Our next phase will move us from “data tracking” to “insight tracking.”
In conclusion, Chicago Lights’ implementation of Salesforce is the first step toward streamlining operations, enhancing participant engagement, and improving program outcomes. By leveraging Salesforce's robust features, the organization as a whole is gaining greater efficiency, effectiveness, and impact in their mission to empower communities.
“Rubin and the OneTenth Team have provided the highest level of care, communication, and service. The proposal, discovery, design, training, and implementation stages have flowed seamlessly and efficiently. Rubin and the team took the time to understand our needs, design a Salesforce instance that works for us, and continue to train us and create customizations to make the instance even better. I’ve implemented two other databases in my time here at Chicago Lights and this is the only one that has ever worked in the way we need it to. OneTenth made it possible for Salesforce to meet almost every need we’ve had for data management, implementing workflows that increase staff efficiency and program effectiveness, and reporting. We look forward to our continued work with OneTenth!” - Alex Cornwell, Director of Evaluation and Impact at Chicago Lights
"We are immensely proud to have partnered with Chicago Lights on their Salesforce implementation journey. Their dedication to transforming lives and empowering historically marginalized communities is truly inspiring. Working alongside such a remarkable organization has been a privilege, and we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their mission. We look forward to continuing our partnership and making an even greater impact together." - Rubin Singh, CEO of OneTenth Consulting

Firelight Media - Fundraising and Program Management With Salesforce
Achieving this vision at scale requires a robust technical infrastructure that supports both internal staff and program participants. In early 2022, Firelight Media selected OneTenth as their Salesforce implementation partner to not only lay the foundation of CRM for the organization, but also provide training, guidance, and nonprofit best practices – setting Firelight Media up for long-term success.
Firelight Media is the premier destination for non-fiction cinema by and about communities of color. They produce documentary films, support filmmakers of color, and cultivate audiences for their work. Firelight Media is committed to reach and engage diverse audiences around the world through documentary films.
Firelight Media’s flagship program, Documentary Lab, seeks out and develops emerging filmmakers of color who make artful and innovative nonfiction films. The 18-month Documentary Lab provides filmmakers with customized mentorship from prominent leaders in the documentary world, as well as funding, professional development workshops, and networking opportunities.
The Findings:
Despite Firelight Media’s growth and impact increasing year over year, the lack of integration amongst data sources was making it challenging to develop a comprehensive picture of each constituent’s engagement. Data was siloed by department and program area, which prohibited Firelight Media from taking advantage of synergies and collaboration that shared data offers. Specifically…
The Artist Programs teams was using Submittable to house participant data and to support the application process
The Development team was using Donorbox as its fundraising portal and to house online and offline donations
The Communications team was using MailChimp as its primary email marketing tool
Key constituent, partner, stakeholder, and event registration data were being managed in spreadsheets and separate data sources
Grant details (status, requirements, deliverables, payment schedules, etc.) were being managed in spreadsheets.
The Challenge:
Ultimately, Artist Programs staff wanted the ability to retrieve a participant’s profile and be able to see what programs they applied for, what programs they participated in, and scholarships or grant funding they received. Development wanted one place to track grants and grant deliverables, but also an easy way to report on the various fundraising platforms and channels without having to manually re-enter or upload data. And the Communications team was looking for one comprehensive picture of the constituent with their participation, interests, and donation history all in one place, so they can confidently send personalized communications based on the constituent’s interest. As the organization grew, it became critical to transition off of these disparate systems and into one centralized platform. By doing so, the organization would have one 360-degree view of their constituents and the ability to track engagement and build relationships – creating more opportunities for synergy between programs, development, and communications.
The Solution:
Early on, OneTenth and Firelight Media concluded that the Salesforce platform was the right CRM foundation to meet all the critical needs for supporting programs, fundraising, and communications. Together, they…
Configured the Nonprofit Cloud’s Nonprofit Success Pack
Implemented and integrated Give Lively, as Firelight Media’s online donation platform
Integrated Submittable with Salesforce to support the application and survey processes
Implemented and integrated FormAssembly to support web sign-ups, applicant follow-up, and surveys
Implemented and Integrated Campaign Monitor to centralize email marketing efforts and communications
Implemented and integrated Eventbrite to support event registrations
Migrated relevant data from Donorbox, Mailchimp and other end-user data sources
Developed reports and dashboards
Collaborated for end-user training
Impact:
As a result of our work together, Firelight Media can now...
Access a consolidated view of fundraising and program data in one place, both in the cloud and on-the-go
See online donations flow directly into Salesforce without any uploads or manual intervention
Easily send email acknowledgements and year-end donor summaries directly from Salesforce
Easily report on financials, receipting, organization details, and program impact
Manage the full grant lifecycle, keeping track of requirements and upcoming deliverables
Visualize programmatic data trends quickly on dashboards with real-time data
See a more complete picture of a constituent’s engagement with the organization
"Working with Rubin Singh and his team at OneTenth Consulting has been a pleasure. “It’s been a privilege working with the team at Firelight Media. Their programs supporting filmmakers of color lift up voices, stories, and experiences that have long been suppressed. Pat Tillman Foundation - Fundraising & Program Management With Salesforce
The lack of a centralized CRM prevented PTF from having a complete view of a constituent's engagement with the organization. Ultimately, staff wanted the ability to retrieve one constituent’s profile and be able to see what races they participated in, what products they purchased through the online store, whether they are an active scholar or part of the alumni community, and to what initiatives they donated to.
The Pat Tillman Foundation (PTF) identifies remarkable military service members, veterans and spouses and empowers them with academic scholarships, lifelong leadership development opportunities and a diverse, global community of high-performing mentors and peers. Known as the Tillman Scholars, they make an impact globally and in their communities as they lead through action in the fields of healthcare, business, public service, STEM, education and the humanities.
The Pat Tillman Foundation achieves this vision through its scholarship program, leadership training, and a variety of networking and collaboration events designed to encourage both scholars and the public at large to lead like Pat Tillman did: with selflessness, with integrity, intellectual curiosity, and a thirst for education.
Achieving this vision at scale requires a robust technical infrastructure that supports both internal staff and external stakeholders. In early 2020, PTF reached out to OneTenth Consulting to perform a technology assessment and evaluate opportunities to optimize their technology stack. After a series of visioning workshops, interviews, and a technology evaluation, OneTenth drafted their findings and recommendations, encapsulated in a roadmap. The Pat Tillman Foundation retained OneTenth to implement all phases of the roadmap.
The Findings:
Despite the Foundation’s growth and impact increasing year over year, the lack of integration amongst data sources made it challenging to develop a comprehensive picture of each constituent’s engagement. Specifically,
The Programs teams used Salesforce to house scholar data and to support the application process
The Development team used Kindful CRM as its fundraising portal and to house online and offline donations
Several other data sources tracked constituent engagement (Shopify, RunSignUp, and PeopleGrove), none of which were integrated
Staff managed key constituent, partner, and stakeholder data in spreadsheets and separate data sources
Staff managed grant details (status, requirements, deliverables, payment schedules, etc.) in spreadsheets and separate data sources
The Challenge:
The lack of a centralized CRM prevented PTF from having a complete view of a constituent's engagement with the organization. Ultimately, staff wanted the ability to retrieve one constituent’s profile and be able to see what races they participated in, what products they purchased through the online store, whether they are an active scholar or part of the alumni community, and to what initiatives they donated to. All of this allows PTF to gain deeper insights about their constituents, so staff can serve them in more personalized ways. As the organization continued to grow, it became critical to transition off of these disparate systems and into one centralized platform. By doing so, the organization can access one 360-degree view of their constituents, as well as gain the ability to track engagement and build relationships - creating more opportunities for synergy between programs, marketing, and development.
The Solution:
During the analysis, OneTenth and PTF concluded that the Salesforce platform could meet all the critical needs to support programs and fundraising. Together, we…
Configured the Nonprofit Cloud’s Nonprofit Success Pack
Implemented and integrated Qgiv, as PTF’s online donation platform
Integrated SurveyMonkey Apply and Form Assembly to support the application and survey processes
Integrated Campaign Monitor to centralize email marketing efforts and communications
Integrated Cloudingo for data hygiene and duplicate management
Migrated relevant data from Kindful CRM and other end-user data sources
Developed reports and dashboards
Collaborated for end-user training
After using the system for several months and adhering to OneTenth’s “crawl, walk, run” approach to CRM implementation, PTF decided to further extend and enhance their system. OneTenth implemented the eShopSync solution to allow all Shopify transactions to seamlessly flow into Salesforce without any user intervention. As the Pat Tillman Foundation embarks on 2023, planned enhancements include implementing RunSignUp’s integration with Salesforce to capture race registrations and an integration with PeopleGrove to track alumni engagement.
Impact:
As a result of our work together, the Pat Tillman Foundation can now...
Access a consolidated view of fundraising and program data in one place, both the cloud and on-the-go
See online donations flow directly into Salesforce without any uploads or manual intervention
See a more complete picture of a constituent’s engagement with the Foundation
“I became part of the PTF community in 2011, when I was selected as a Tillman Scholar, and it’s been an honor to watch it grow into what it is today,” said Dan Futrell, CEO and 2011 Tillman Scholar. “Rubin and his team helped us identify what we needed to scale into the future we’re planning for ourselves and to help us create the tech stack we need to best serve our scholars, investors, and supporters.”
“It’s been an honor working with the team at the Pat Tillman Foundation. Their programs are empowering the next generation of private and public sector leaders, tackling challenges in healthcare, technology, civil rights, education and more. We are inspired by their commitment to strengthening communities at home and around the world.” - Rubin Singh, OneTenth Founder & CEO

The Coalition for Rainforest Nations - Fundraising & Grant Management With Salesforce
CfRN achieves their vision through policy support, training & capacity building, and direct finance.
In order to achieve this ambitious vision at scale, CfRN needed to modernize its technology infrastructure, laying the foundation for digital transformation
The Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN) seeks responsible stewardship of the World’s last great rainforests through innovative strategies which integrate social, economic and scientific rationales to achieve environmental and social sustainability.
CfRN originated the global conservation mechanism – Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) to stop deforestation. REDD+ was successfully mandated in the Paris Climate Agreement (2015), and covers 90% of the world’s tropical rainforests forests.
CfRN achieves their vision through policy support, training & capacity building, and direct finance.
The Challenge:
In order to achieve this ambitious vision at scale, CfRN needed to modernize its technology infrastructure, laying the foundation for digital transformation. The specific challenges were…

The Clubhouse Network - Fundraising & Grants Management With Salesforce
The Clubhouse outgrew the features and functionality LGL could offer and wanted to ensure staff had access to cutting edge tools to support relationship building, fundraising efforts, and the grants management lifecycle. It became imperative to transition off of LGL and consolidate into one centralized database. By doing so, the organization would have one 360-degree view of their constituents, creating more opportunities for synergy between programs and development.
The Clubhouse Network’s mission is to provide a creative and safe out-of-school learning environment where young people from underserved communities work with adult mentors to explore their own ideas, develop new skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology.
Today, The Clubhouse Network is a global community comprised of more than 100 Clubhouses in 21 countries, providing 25,000 youth per year with access to resources, skills, and experiences to help them succeed in their careers, contribute to their communities, and lead outstanding lives.
In order to achieve this vision at scale, The Clubhouse implemented the Salesforce CRM platform to better manage programs, partners, and stakeholders. While a centralized database for program data added immediate value, The Clubhouse historically housed all donor and fundraising data in a separate donor database, Little Green Light (LGL).

OneTenth Consulting is grateful for the opportunity to partner with The Hispanic Summer Program (HSP) for the implementation of their Salesforce CRM system, supporting their fundraising and program management needs.
HSP’s mission is to supplement and enrich the theological and ministerial education being offered in ATS seminaries and universities, with academic courses and other activities directly addressing Latinx history, ministry, and theology. HSP accomplishes this through a series of programs that provide a Hispanic environment as an alternative educational experience in theology and religion primarily (but not exclusively) for Latinx students from seminaries, universities, and other programs of higher education where there is a dearth of Latinx faculty.

Creating safe and stable homes and families: Inspiring the fight for equal justice
AVLF and OneTenth worked collaboratively to configure Salesforce and migrate only the relevant data necessary to support their programs.
Creating safer, more stable families, homes, and communities
Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF) stands with, for, and in support of low-income Atlantans as they demand safe and stable housing, insist on fair pay for an honest day’s work, and break free from intimate partner abuse.
Setting AVLF up for long-term growth and success
OneTenth Consulting partnered with Salesforce.Org Professional Services and SpringML to transition AVLF off of their legacy Salesforce org that had grown increasingly complex and cluttered due to customizations over time. Over the course of five weeks, AVLF and OneTenth worked collaboratively to configure Salesforce + NPSP and migrate only the relevant data necessary to support their fundraising and programmatic efforts. This ”fresh start” with Salesforce now allows AVLF to:
Manage constituents using NPSP’s Organization, Household and Household Member structure
Cultivate stronger relationships by utilizing NPSP’s Affiliation and Relationship capabilities
Leverage more of what the Salesforce ecosystem has to offer, given it’s simplified architecture, including AppExchange apps and plug-and-play integrations

Tutoring Chicago - Fundraising & Program Management With Salesforce
In 2019, Tutoring Chicago reached out to OneTenth Consulting to evaluate their current CRM system. This evaluation was designed to identify ways of optimizing their CRM usage and to look at alternative solutions that will better align with Tutoring Chicago’s future strategy.
Tutoring Chicago's mission is to empower economically disadvantaged children through education, offering free one-to-one tutoring services to students in 1st through 6th grade. This year alone, Tutoring Chicago will serve 900 students from low-income families all around the Chicago area for tutoring and high-quality programming that is not only academic, but developmental and reflective.
In 2019, Tutoring Chicago reached out to OneTenth Consulting to evaluate their current CRM system. This evaluation was designed to identify ways of optimizing their CRM usage and to look at alternative solutions that will better align with Tutoring Chicago’s future strategy.
The Challenges
Tutoring Chicago had been using NeonCRM to manage student and tutor profiles, to facilitate the registration process for volunteers, and to coordinate tutor orientations. While NeonCRM had been a suitable solution up to this point, it was unable to scale and evolve to the organization’s growing needs. Specifically, Tutoring Chicago needed:
A centralized platform that serves all key fundraising needs, including one-time giving, recurring giving, in-kind gifts, and peer-to-peer fundraising
The same platform to track student and tutor biographical and demographic data, student/tutor matches, program logistics, and weekly attendance
A flexible and intuitive forms solution that supported conditional and skip logic
An integrated and intuitive email tool that exchanges relevant information with the CRM
A thorough analysis concluded that Salesforce’s Nonprofit Cloud would be a better fit to support Tutoring Chicago’s fundraising and program management needs.
The Implementation
Following OneTenth’s recommendation of small yet impactful phases, Tutoring Chicago first focused on fundraising, which included:
Installing the Salesforce Platform and the Nonprofit Success Pack
Configuring the system to support Tutoring Chicago’s terminology and development strategy
Configuring the online donation tool and peer-to-peer platform
Migrating relevant data from NeonCRM
Developing reports and dashboards
End-User Training and Post-Deployment Support
After a few months of using the system and collecting our learnings, the second phase began with a focus on program management
The implementation included…
Customizing the salesforce platform to support Tutoring Chicago’s programmatic needs
Configuration and knowledge transfer for the online forms tool
Configuration and knowledge transfer for the email marketing tool
Migrating relevant data from NeonCRM
Developing reports and dashboards
End-User Training and Post-Deployment Support
Technical administrative training including ongoing maintenance and data uploads
Technology and Tools
Tutoring Chicago chose Salesforce for several reasons:
Ability to leverage Salesforce.org’s Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) application that provides best-in-class features to support nonprofits such as complex gift processing, grant management, and high-touch fundraising
Access to the Power Of Us Hub community to exchange ideas and best practices with thousands of nonprofits with similar needs as Tutoring Chicago
Access to the AppExchange, a marketplace of new and innovative tools readily available to extend Salesforce’s functionality and enhance the user’s experience
Ability to create custom modules to support non-fundraising tasks, such as program management, event registration, and impact measurement
To complement the Salesforce solution, Tutoring Chicago and OneTenth implemented the following tools:
Rallybound to support online donation and peer-to-peer fundraising
Form Assembly to support student enrollment and tutor/volunteer registration
ConstantContact, which was already in place at Tutoring Chicago, was integrated with Salesforce to support email marketing and communications
EventBrite, using the integration through Zapier, was used for orientation registration
What’s Next
Tutoring Chicago now has a centralized platform for fundraising and program management that is scalable and flexible to evolve with their growing needs. Adhering to OneTenth’s “crawl, walk, run” approach to CRM, OneTenth and Tutoring Chicago aim to enhance the platform further in 2020 to support surveys, data visualization, and impact measurement.
“We are inspired by Tutoring Chicago’s work, serving thousands of economically disadvantaged students through their weekly tutoring program, at no cost to students and their families. Their programs allow students to grow both personally and academically and ensures each and every student receives the individualized attention they deserve. We are very fortunate for our partnership with Tutoring Chicago and are grateful to play a small role in moving their mission forward” - Rubin Singh, OneTenth Founder & CEO
